COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Any Sundae—the south Salem ice cream shop on Commercial S.E.—set up a mini food pantry to serve those affected by the November pause in SNAP benefits. Owner Caleb Hayward spent nearly $300 to stock the table and the store accepts food pick-ups and donations daily from noon to 9 p.m.  Salem Reporter
  • Downtown Salem will kick off the holiday season on November 28 with a volunteer-run community parade organized by the Salem Main Street Association. Roads close at 4:30 p.m. and the parade runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.—a tree lighting at Commercial and Court will follow.  Salem Business Journal
  • Salem food pantries are expecting chaos this weekend after a federal judge ordered SNAP benefits amid the government shutdown, but state officials have not confirmed when Oregonians will receive their payments. Gov. Tina Kotek plans to distribute $5 million to food banks—state agencies will load benefits to debit cards once federal funds are released.  Salem Reporter
  • Local restaurants are stepping in as SNAP benefits stopped today, offering free food and reduced meals to help ease the impact. On Any Sundae has set up a non-perishable food table until Christmas Eve, while other eateries plan Thanksgiving meals and donations—actions that support nearly 90,000 SNAP users in the area.  Statesman Journal

  • Wells Fargo will lay off 147 employees in Salem on Dec. 26 as it permanently closes its call center on Hawthorne Avenue SE—workers were notified on Oct. 28—and will be given severance and career assistance. The decision follows earlier plans and affects the bank’s local operations.  Statesman Journal

  • Chemawa Indian School marks 140 years in Salem—after relocating from Forest Grove in 1885, it remains a federal boarding school that has served local education.   Statesman Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Oregon Department of Emergency Management and the Department of Land Conservation and Development announced that FEMA approved the 2025–30 Oregon Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan, which outlines updated strategies to reduce risks from wildfires, earthquakes, floods, drought, and landslides. The plan, developed over a 20-month process with 348 participants, will guide state and local efforts and help secure FEMA mitigation funding for future projects.  1430 KYKN
  • State Treasurer Elizabeth Steiner said that treasury staff reduced the share of the $97 billion public pension fund in private equity funds to 26% after criticism over past investments. The council will lower that percentage to 25% by year’s end and eventually cap it at 20%—with $26 billion already in private equity.  Salem Reporter

  • Oregon State Hospital maintained its accreditation from The Joint Commission after a review confirmed it sustained corrective actions for patient falls and restraint practices.
