Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 27th of October.
Good morning, Salem.
💼 Business
Salem City Council met Oct.
26 to consider a month-to-month lease of 1.69 acres at 2640 Portland Road NE so a local owner can open a food truck park and administrative offices, with proposed rent of $4,843 a month starting Nov. 1.
🎓 Education
Salem-Keizer Public Schools plans to close six elementary schools in 2027, and students from three of those schools would move into buildings with significantly lower reading proficiency.
Superintendent Andrea Castañeda says academic performance was not used in the selection because the district considered that inequitable.
🏥 Health
Oregon will raise PacificSource's capitation rate by 6% next year, increasing payments by about $34 per member per month so the insurer can care for roughly 160,000+ Medicaid enrollees in Marion and Polk counties.
📰 Real Estate
Backus Estates is proposed along Chemawa Road in Keizer to subdivide 5.15 acres (1171, 1191 and 1201 Chemawa Road N) into about 80 lots, mostly townhomes, with two duplex lots, and the existing single‑family homes would be removed.
