ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Oregon Employment Department said initial unemployment claims have risen over the past two weeks due to seasonal trends. Average claims increased 25 percent compared to the final week of September—agency data shows the federal shutdown has played only a limited role.  1430 KYKN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek ordered state agencies to speed up permits for solar and wind projects that must break ground by July 4 — an action meant to secure federal tax credits. The order is aimed at cutting delays — though some renewable advocates worry about transmission queue challenges.  Salem Reporter
  • Organizers expect nearly 10,000 people to gather at the Capitol from noon to 3 p.m. in Salem—triggered by the federal shutdown, rising immigration arrests and possible National Guard deployment—and join a peaceful No Kings protest.  Salem Reporter
  • About 100 residents met at Macleay Grange on October 16 to voice concerns over a federal plan to expand the national cemetery to a 307-acre parcel at 3515 Howell Prairie Rd S.E. They said the plan may harm water supplies, increase traffic and noise, and lower home values while state Rep. Ed Diehl listened to their issues.  Salem Reporter
