Good morning, Salem. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 4th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mark Wardell of West Salem’s CERT explains that Salem residents can join a free earthquake preparedness course starting Oct. 9 through Nov. 13 and practice the 'drop, cover, and hold on' drill on Oct. 16 at 10:16 a.m.—all designed to improve readiness for a major quake. The column also highlights a Great Oregon Camp-In event from Oct. 17—19 that will allow households to practice self-sufficient living during extended power outages.  Salem Reporter
  • Salem Fire Department will host open houses every Saturday in October with events running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as part of National Fire Prevention Week—starting today at Fire Station 2 at 875 Madison St. NE, where family-friendly activities include giveaways, a coloring contest, safety tours, refreshments, and equipment displays; future events will be at Station 5 on Oct. 11, Station 7 on Oct. 18, and Station 10 on Oct. 25.  Statesman Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oregon began phasing in new SNAP work requirements on Oct. 1—able-bodied adults without dependents in Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas, Yamhill, Benton, and Hood River counties who do not work or volunteer 80 hours a month will face a limit of three months of aid in a three-year period. The state estimates that over 313,000 SNAP recipients may see cuts as the rule also reduces utility allowances and strips benefits from refugees, asylum seekers, and others.  Oregon Capital Chronicle
  • Oregon victim assistance groups that help crime victims will get $15 million in VOCA funds after the DOJ dropped its plan to link funding to immigration cooperation—saving jobs and services. Local offices like Salem’s Center for Hope and Safety will use the funds to continue supporting victims and their families.  Statesman Journal
