ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Over 800 volunteers cleaned Oregon beaches and rivers from Sept. 20-28, collecting nearly 10,000 pounds of litter as part of an annual cleanup organized by SOLVE and OnPoint Community Credit Union—efforts that also removed invasive plants and maintained trees to prepare green spaces for winter. This large-scale event marked International Coastal Cleanup Day, National Public Lands Day and World Rivers Day.  Statesman Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Tina Kotek issued a proclamation that designates Oct. 16-19 as Earthquake Preparedness Days so Oregonians can join the ShakeOut drill at 10:16 a.m. on Oct. 16 and the Camp-In from Oct. 17-19—activities that help families practice earthquake safety.  1430 KYKN
  • ODOT reported that more than 200 workers quit amid layoff uncertainty after a $4.3 billion transportation funding package was passed, and the agency canceled planned layoffs and began recruiting new workers ahead of winter maintenance — officials said additional funds may be needed for the 2027 budget cycle as nearly one in every six positions remains vacant.  Statesman Journal
  • The U.S. Attorney’s Office has asked a federal judge to order Marion, Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties to provide records on 10 men convicted of violent crimes to aid federal immigration enforcement. The subpoenas target information on parolees born in Mexico — and the request comes amid claims that Oregon's sanctuary law restricts data sharing.  Salem Reporter
