BUSINESS NEWS

  • Don Pancho opened its new 300,000 square foot manufacturing facility at 3305 25th St. SE during a Wednesday ribbon cutting ceremony—tripling its former space and promising one million tortillas a day while now employing over 400 workers. City leaders and community members attended the event as the company plans further expansion in its operations.  Salem Reporter

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Oregon lawmakers passed new work rules that took effect Friday, stopping employers from asking a candidate’s age during interviews and letting workers use sick time for more purposes. The reforms also gave extra funds to the Labor-and-Industries Bureau so it can clear wage-theft cases and update public employer policies.  Oregon Capital Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, Salem Reporter began free access for Salem-Keizer School District on work computers and Chromebooks so students can read reliable local news — a move that boosts media literacy. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State biologists are watching a bird flu outbreak near Staats Lake north of Salem that killed about 300 snow geese in 2023 and spread to wild mammals like skunks and bobcats. Officials say the virus is expected to remain on the landscape and urge residents to report dead wildlife — tracking these cases is key to understanding its impact.  Salem Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cherriots’ board of directors did not vote on the payroll tax proposal last night and will decide later this fall whether to impose the tax or take it to voters—local business groups oppose the measure. The board scheduled one open house on Tuesday, Sept. 30 from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for the public to ask questions.  1430 KYKN
  • The Oregon Center for Public Policy proposed a measure that would require large, publicly traded corporations to publicly disclose detailed tax and financial data by filing with the Oregon Secretary of State—this proposal aims to expose potential tax loopholes and guide future legislative review pending a sponsor. Lawmakers will consider the measure in the next regular session if a sponsor steps forward.  Oregon Capital Chronicle
  • Construction crews restored artwork and uncovered the original paint color on the Oregon State Capitol Rotunda while adding new trusses for increased stability—ensuring the building meets modern safety standards. The rotunda will reopen to the public on September 29.  Statesman Journal
  • Today, the VA is evaluating a 307 acre property near Howell Prairie Road S.E. east of Salem as a potential site to expand Willamette National Cemetery and offer veterans more burial options—public comments are being accepted during an ongoing environmental assessment.  Salem Reporter
