- ➤ On Sept 22, eight students and three teachers from Kawagoe visited Salem as part of a 40-year sister city exchange and toured local spots such as Ike Box, the YMCA, the Riverfront Carousel and the mayor’s office—strengthening ties between the communities. Statesman Journal
- ➤ Salem is hosting events this week from today to Oct. 1 that include an Oaxacan culture exhibit at World Beat Gallery, a Storybook Character Adventure at Gilbert House on Friday, and free comedy screenings at Salem Cinema on Friday and Saturday. The week also features the season reopening of Mill Creek Haunted Prison and a night market at Bush’s Pasture Park on Saturday — giving locals many fun choices. Salem Reporter
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On Sept. 23, an 18-year-old hiker lost in the mountains near Tumble Lake was rescued by Marion County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue after he texted for help at 5:20 p.m.—volunteers met him at Upper Tumble Ridge Trailhead by 7:40 p.m. and reached him by 9 p.m. with no injuries reported. - ➤ Today, the new Grocery Outlet at 3975 Commercial St. SE opens in south Salem under the direction of owner Mark Mazzuca. Workers set up the store with local artwork on display—creating a unique touch—and will welcome shoppers soon. Statesman Journal

- ➤ Rigoberto Hernandez Hernandez — an Oregon wildland firefighter — was arrested by immigration agents while fighting a wildfire in Washington and was released Tuesday after nearly four weeks in detention; he is now home with his family. Oregon Capital Chronicle

- ➤ Marion County released records with personal details of parolees after a public records request—officials stated they will not share the information with ICE until the lawsuit over the sanctuary law is resolved. Salem Reporter received the unredacted files without a fee. Salem Reporter
- ➤ On September 24, Salem Mayor Julie Hoy sent a letter to state legislators saying she did not support a $4.3 billion transportation funding proposal—she argued it would burden working families, small businesses and rural residents by raising taxes and fees.
