Good morning, Salem. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 11th of September.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, more than 60 union-represented Roth’s Fresh Markets meat and deli workers will strike from 6 a.m. until Sept. 13 if wage negotiations fail to yield a fair contract—union spokesman Miles Eshaia said the move follows concerns that workers are paid less than peers.  Salem Reporter
  • CLINK! opened today on the second floor of The Forge in downtown Salem. Owner Sheena Nash — a local entrepreneur, and Executive Chef Brittni Armenta lead the French-American bistro as it offers seasonal cuisine and hosts events to boost downtown redevelopment.  Salem Business Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • About 20 local volunteers spend years carving and painting unique wood animals at the Hazel Patton Riverfront Carousel—each animal takes three to five years to complete—adding creative designs to the classic lineup of horses. Donna Miller and her colleagues work on these intricate projects on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, while sponsors sometimes donate funds for new pieces.  Salem Reporter

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Between April and August, Oregon had its fourth driest period since records began, leaving nearly 80% of the Northwest in drought—more than half in severe or extreme conditions. Governor Kotek declared a drought emergency in several counties to expedite water permits and support farming and communities.  Oregon Capital Chronicle
  • The emerald ash borer, a small invasive beetle that kills ash trees, was found at six new sites in the northern Willamette Valley this summer — including locations in Multnomah, Washington, Yamhill, and Clackamas counties. Salem officials and arborists treated high-value ash trees and urged residents to report sightings — aiming to slow the pest's spread.  Statesman Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Tina Kotek signed an order on Sept. 8 that sets a 2060 deadline for state agencies to upgrade large buildings to stronger earthquake safety standards—ensuring that workers can quickly resume work after a quake.
