🎭 Culture
Weird Al Yankovic headlined the Oregon State Fair on Monday at the L.B.
Day Amphitheater in Salem and entertained the crowd with medley tunes and his signature water gargling routine as part of his Bigger and Weirder 2026 Tour.
🎓 Education
West Salem High School welcomed about 400 freshmen on Sept.
8 as they began the 2026-27 school year, with teachers helping students settle into new classes (and schedules) during a busy first day.
🏛️ Government
Lawmakers heard from Gov. Kotek’s economic advisers on Tuesday as they discussed next year’s proposals for reducing the estate tax, boosting state infrastructure spending, and easing regulations to aid businesses and lower-income families.
The recommendations come at a time when Oregon aims to spur economic growth amid challenging market conditions.
Oregon employers can apply for a new job creation tax credit until Oct.
31 – the credit provides $1,000 per new job for up to 10 jobs and requires each job to pay at least 150% of the minimum wage. Business Oregon will certify applications in November and December.
🏥 Health
Salem Health completed its affiliation with Santiam Hospital on Sept.
1, and the system is transitioning Santiam employees while planning millions for infrastructure upgrades as patient care remains unchanged during integration over the coming months (local specialists and resources will be connected).
