CRIME NEWS

  • Nathaniel McCrae Jr. admitted in Marion County juvenile court to second degree murder for the Bush Park shooting on March 7th that killed 16 year old Josue Vasquez-Valenzuela and pled guilty to unlawful use of a weapon, receiving a sentence of custody with the Oregon Youth Authority until his 25th birthday along with a concurrent 60 month term in the Department of Corrections—District Attorney Paige Clarkson said current laws fail public safety while the victim’s family expressed dismay that he could be released in as little as eight years.  1430 KYKN
  • Salem police arrested Vincent Mendoza Chavez, 33, after he fired at officers responding to a burglary call on the 4300 block of 25th Ave N.E. in northeast Salem on Saturday afternoon—one officer sustained minor injuries from debris when his ballistic shield was hit and Chavez surrendered after negotiations with SWAT and crisis teams.  Salem Reporter
  • A 33-year-old Salem man was arrested on Sept. 6 after a standoff during which one officer was injured when his shield was hit by a bullet and another suffered minor injuries from debris—he is now held at Marion County Jail on charges of attempted aggravated murder, attempted assault on a public safety officer and unlawful use of a weapon.  Statesman Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Salem needs a $3 to $5 million minimum revenue guarantee to attract a commercial airline back to the Salem-Willamette Valley Airport, city staff said. City Council will review the proposal on Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. in Loucks Auditorium — officials warn that without new funds and an airline letter of intent by November, air service may not resume until summer 2026.  Statesman Journal

  • Oregon Housing and Community Services announced more than $291 million for affordable housing projects in Salem and Dallas; in Salem, Compass Points will offer 120 units, Cottages United 15, Gussie Belle II 60 and Joseph Street Apartments 183 — adding nearly 400 new homes to serve families, older adults, veterans and people exiting homelessness — as these developments move forward.   1430 KYKN
