CRIME NEWS

  • Salem police arrested one adult and three teens on Sept. 1 after reports of gunfire were received at Wallace Marine Park in West Salem—officers recovered a loaded handgun and a short-barreled rifle but did not find anyone injured.  Statesman Journal
  • Salem Police responded to Wallace Marine Park Monday evening after several callers reported hearing gunfire and a possible shooting of a female; officers detained four Salem residents on a pedestrian bridge—three 17-year-old males and one 25-year-old man identified as Grant Pizzuto—and recovered a loaded .45 handgun from one juvenile and a backpack likely containing a short-barreled rifle while a drone search found no injured persons.  1430 KYKN
  • Salem police arrested three teen boys and a man after callers reported shots fired at Wallace Marine Park just before midnight Monday—officers recovered a loaded .45 handgun and a short-barreled rifle but did not find any victim.  Salem Reporter
  • Steven Adams, 58, died Monday in his cell at Marion County Jail when deputies found him unresponsive at 7:53 a.m.—emergency responders attempted CPR and an outside agency from Linn County is investigating his death.  Salem Reporter

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Salem-Keizer School District has partnered with Salem Reporter to provide free access to local news on school computers for students and staff, including the district’s 12,190 high school students. The program does not require account sign-up and uses private browsing—ensuring a safe and easy way to read local news as the new school year begins.  Salem Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Reps. Cyrus Javadi of Tillamook and Tom Andersen of Salem announced Sunday that they plan to propose a constitutional amendment in the 2026 short session to ban law enforcement masking—if approved, the measure will force officers to wear uniforms with their names and badge numbers while exempting undercover teams. The proposal aims to increase accountability by preventing officers from concealing their identities.  Oregon Capital Chronicle
  • The Senate has delayed a vote on the transportation tax until Sept 17 so that Sen. Gorsek can recover from back surgery—Governor Kotek postponed layoffs until Oct 15 if the tax bill does not pass, which will protect hundreds of workers.  Oregon Capital Chronicle
  • Sen. Jeff Merkley returned from an eight-day trip to Gaza’s border with Israel—where he and Sen. Chris Van Hollen monitored war impacts and humanitarian aid—to urge lawmakers to pause weapons sales until aid reaches starving civilians.
