Construction crews are making steady progress at Geer Community Park in Salem while most areas remain closed, with a new skatepark, dog park, and upgraded soccer and baseball fields set to open later this year or next spring — local contractors are advancing work on fields and pedestrian paths under a bond and state grant.

On Aug. 16, volunteers from the Salem Town Advisory Committee — including business leaders from Salem Center mall and Clutch Industries — helped clean up Electric Alley and nearby sidewalks to bring fresh energy downtown.

Monmouth resident Mackenzie Newland launched The Reading Nest to improve literacy in rural Polk County by hosting story times and pop-up events for young children.

The nonprofit received over 2,000 book donations and will run events at low-income housing facilities starting August 27 while a mobile library bus is planned for spring 2026—The Reading Nest aims to bring free books to those in need.

Salem Hospital earned its fourth Magnet Recognition for nursing excellence on August 15 — an honor achieved by only 2% of hospitals worldwide.
