  • Construction crews are making steady progress at Geer Community Park in Salem while most areas remain closed, with a new skatepark, dog park, and upgraded soccer and baseball fields set to open later this year or next spring — local contractors are advancing work on fields and pedestrian paths under a bond and state grant.  1430 KYKN
  • On Aug. 16, volunteers from the Salem Town Advisory Committee — including business leaders from Salem Center mall and Clutch Industries — helped clean up Electric Alley and nearby sidewalks to bring fresh energy downtown.  Statesman Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Monmouth resident Mackenzie Newland launched The Reading Nest to improve literacy in rural Polk County by hosting story times and pop-up events for young children. The nonprofit received over 2,000 book donations and will run events at low-income housing facilities starting August 27 while a mobile library bus is planned for spring 2026—The Reading Nest aims to bring free books to those in need.  Statesman Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Salem Hospital earned its fourth Magnet Recognition for nursing excellence on August 15 — an honor achieved by only 2% of hospitals worldwide. Hospital leaders said the award proves their strong commitment to high-quality care and teamwork.  1430 KYKN
