- ➤ Friends of Pioneer Cemetery has built a fund valued at over $1.7 million, created an online burial list, and earned National Register status to care for the 171-year-old cemetery where early local leaders are buried. The group meets monthly for work days and will host a SOLVE event on Sept. 20 — a plan to fix issues like vandalism and volunteer shortages. Statesman Journal
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Ishan Pillai, a Salem veteran and civil engineering technician, went on a crab fishing trip in Newport and lost his life when the F/V Das Bug capsized on Sunday—coast guard officials are investigating the incident. Salem Reporter
- ➤ A truck crashed into telephone wires on Steele Lane on July 9 and caused a fuse failure on Southeast Gath Road that started a fire burning 30 acres of former prison farmland and destroying three barns — firefighters controlled the blaze in about four hours while one firefighter was injured and residents were evacuated with $1 million in property damage. - ➤ Rogue Valley-based Hunter Communications is expanding its fiber internet service in northeast Salem and plans to serve 7,000 homes by year end—its crew is building a service station at 1168 15th Street N.E. while local jobs are set to grow as the work continues. Salem Reporter

- ➤ Pentacle Theatre’s production of Hairspray premiered Friday with a diverse cast of over three dozen local volunteers showcasing extravagant wigs and vintage fashion at 324 52nd Ave. N.W. — tickets for remaining shows through Sept. 6 are selling out quickly. Salem Reporter

- ➤ City officials selected veteran developer Charles Weathers of ORREO LLC to redevelop Block 45 near Riverfront Park into a mixed-use building with 40 affordable apartments, a winery, a restaurant and event space—but no grocery store is planned.
