ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On August 8, two adult males were rescued from a draft boat pinned among rocks at the top of Mill City Falls on the North Santiam as first responders and a local outfitter coordinated the rescue—teams from multiple fire and law enforcement agencies used two rafts to bring the men safely to shore—while medics evaluated them and found no injuries, as both were wearing life jackets.  Statesman Journal
  • A two-alarm fire shut down blocks near Kuebler Boulevard in southeast Salem Sunday night when the blaze spread from a home at 5043 Cumberland Ct. S.E. to a neighboring house—firefighters from Marion County Fire District 1 and the Salem Fire Department brought the fire under control by 9 p.m. with no injuries reported—and streets reopened by 8:30 p.m.  Salem Reporter

CRIME NEWS

  • Federal immigration officers stopped a van at 6 a.m. on Aug 7 as it traveled from Woodburn to Canby and arrested four Guatemalan farmworkers heading to a blueberry farm in Marion County—three other passengers were not detained.  Salem Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Marion County Sheriff's Office, led by Sheriff Nick Hunter, employs over 375 workers across four divisions.  Statesman Journal
  • Salem City Council is voting today at 6 p.m. at Loucks Auditorium—on a performance review of Interim City Manager Krishna Namburi—to decide if the city should start a public recruitment or make a direct appointment. Councilor Linda Nishioka said evaluation forms will be shared with council members for feedback by early September—after Namburi has served for six months following City Manager Keith Stahley’s resignation.  Statesman Journal
  • Salem City Council is set to update plans for safety and livability in downtown and northeast Salem after a July 21 work session showed high calls for police and emergency support. Council members will review proposals for increased police overtime, a pilot co-response model, and funding options for a $70,000 tree planting appropriation—community engagement will continue this fall.  1430 KYKN
  • Salem Fire Department offers free CERT training designed by FEMA that will run during Thursday evenings from October 9 through November 13 — the program ends with a hands-on disaster exercise on November 13 from 8:30 a.m. to noon and is open to all residents and workers.  1430 KYKN
