- ➤ On Aug. 7, ICE arrested three men and one woman near Woodburn while they were headed to work at a Canby blueberry farm—advocates filed a petition for one worker and say the arrests violated their due process rights. Statesman Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Tim Cook, president of Clackamas Community College, finished a 52-day, 1,400-mile run at Columbia Gorge Community College in Hood River — raising $3,261 for Chemeketa students as part of a campaign that collected $131,830 for all 17 Oregon community colleges. Donations remain open through the end of August. Salem Reporter

- ➤ The USDA Forest Service and Oregon State University are seeking volunteers to collect Oregon ash seeds this fall to test for resistance to the emerald ash borer— a virtual workshop on Aug. 14 from noon to 1 p.m. will train participants to gather and prepare the seeds for shipment to a genetic resource center in Cottage Grove. - ➤ Salem city council will review a performance evaluation of Interim City Manager Krishna Namburi at a meeting on Monday, Aug. 11 at 6 p.m. at Loucks Auditorium and online to decide whether to recruit a new manager or appoint her permanently — they will also consider feedback on downtown safety and homelessness along with proposals for a supplemental senior center grant and an energy grant application. - ➤ The Oregon Government Ethics Commission opened an investigation on Aug. 8 into whether Rep. Greg Smith broke ethics laws by not disclosing income from the Morrow Development Corporation in his 2024 and 2025 economic interest statements. He already faced two earlier probes this year regarding his business roles and income disclosures. Statesman Journal
- ➤ Salem took over ambulance service on July 1 and filed a lawsuit against Falck Northwest to recover nearly $7 million in overtime costs and unissued fines, alleging the firm repeatedly failed to meet staffing and response requirements. Officials noted that extra costs arose when firefighters covered ambulance calls even though payments from insurers and health plans partially offset those expenses—details that the lawsuit says will be proven at trial. - ➤ The Oregon Government Ethics Commission is investigating secret conversations by Salem City Council members about former City Manager Keith Stahley and may ask lawmakers for clearer rules on open meetings.
