BUSINESS NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Salem-Keizer School District will require nearly all high schools and about half of the middle schools to use Yondr pouches to lock phones starting this fall to meet Gov. Tina Kotek’s July order banning phones during the school day—schools that used the pouches last year reported improved focus and fewer hallway conflicts. The district will fund the expansion with a $220,000 state grant, adding to the $213,000 spent on pouches last year. Salem Reporter
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State Rep. Paul Evans, D-Monmouth, plans to propose a $300 million disaster preparedness package that will build six+ new emergency training centers and start a Disaster Recovery Authority under the governor after tsunami warnings from a recent Russian earthquake. He said the plan will boost volunteer training and fund local emergency services as Oregon faces fewer responders. Oregon Capital Chronicle
- ➤ Yesterday, the Oregon Department of Forestry added regional air attack teams to its firefighting arsenal and invested in advanced aircraft to quickly suppress wildfires before they grow beyond 10 acres. The new strategy improves coordination between air and ground crews—helping limit damage and protect communities. 1430 KYKN
- ➤ Salem city staff and contractors are working on many improvement projects this summer to update downtown streets, upgrade transportation safety and repair municipal facilities — funded by the 2022 Safety and Livability Bond and other grants.
