- ➤ Re-Entry Services at the Mid-Willamette Valley Community Action Agency has partnered with Chemeketa Community College to offer welding and warehouse job training to help people leaving jail or prison, and the program now operates from a new community-based location on Commercial St. N.E. The welding cohort will graduate soon while a new week-long warehouse course will begin on Aug. 18—providing essential skills and support through ongoing outreach with parole and probation teams. - ➤ Gary Epping broke ground on FRAN, a new community resource center on Northeast Lancaster Drive near Chemeketa Community College that will serve local families with 11,500 square feet of space and 22 suites for nonprofits and government groups to help with housing, education, and other needs. The two-story building will open in spring and include five conference rooms for community meetings and a community room with a kitchen (with features like a treehouse slide and interactive classroom) to give residents a safe place to gather. - ➤ A vigil was held on Gibson Road Northwest on Aug. 1 to honor 17-year-old Elijah Jung (who died in a single-vehicle crash on July 29) as family and friends gathered to share memories. Statesman Journal

- ➤ Elijah Jung, an incoming senior at West Salem High School, died in a car crash on Tuesday, July 29 when his car left the road and struck a tree on Northwest Gibson Road outside West Salem—a vigil was held Friday at 6:30 p.m. to honor him. Salem Reporter
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Business owners from northeast Salem met with city leaders at Chemeketa Community College on Wednesday to discuss public safety and homelessness concerns affecting their storefronts and operations. Officials noted that the meeting followed repeated complaints and stressed a collaborative effort to improve safety and reduce delays in police response—hoping to ease the impact on local businesses. - ➤ Governor Tina Kotek is considering vetoing a plan to allocate $45 million to the Willamette Falls Trust along with three other bills from the 2025 legislative session. Her office said she will review these bills further and announce a decision by Aug. 8 — as debates continue over the proper use of lottery funds and public access to the falls. - ➤ The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department invites public comment on proposed changes to ATV sound and safety rules following House Bill 2232—temporary rules are in place for 180 days until permanent rules are set.
