GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, July 28, Salem City Council declared an emergency for the water system after a federal order requires Detroit Lake to drop to record-low levels in fall, risking treatment issues for 200,000 residents & granting City Manager Keith Stahley authority to fast-track $8M in upgrades before disruptions hit.  Salem Business Journal
  • Salem city councilors declared a state of emergency on Monday to fast track water system upgrades ahead of the Detroit Reservoir drawdown set for fall — the drawdown could overwhelm current water filters. • Governor Kotek signed five new laws Monday to spur more middle housing by letting local governments and developers build duplexes, townhomes and modular homes to ease the state's housing shortage. • Federal agencies have agreed with Oregon and 19 other states that the new Head Start immigration rules will not be enforced until Sept. 4, a pause meant to keep thousands of families from losing vital services. Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield said the rules were rushed and unclear—changes that could have hurt many Oregonians if they went into effect.  Oregon Capital Chronicle
  • Polk County ended its marine patrol on the Willamette River after funding cuts and Marion County took over patrols from Buena Vista to Keizer—Marion County already has a full-time employee and a year-round program to maintain safety, while Polk County may resume patrol if funding returns.  Salem Reporter
  • Oregon Lottery earned four national awards from the National Council on Problem Gambling on July 18 in Columbus, Ohio — the awards recognized its Safer Play campaign, multicultural marketing, overall program, and an individual honor for Stacy Shaw.
