- ➤ At Trinity Covenant Church on Saturday, about 800 people gathered to remember Jeremy Wanak, a beloved Sprague High science teacher who died on July 10 after being hit by an alleged drunk driver during a bike ride on Southeast Delaney Road. - ➤ After a two-alarm fire on July 11 burned the building at 3886 Beverly Ave without injuring anyone, HIV Alliance resumed services from a new space at 2475 Lancaster Drive — WestCare Oregon continued its veteran suicide prevention program from a conference room at the Salem shelter, TLC Medical Transport kept operating from a secondary office despite losing two vehicles, and Marion County Health and Human Services temporarily closed nearby offices for smoke damage. - ➤ Dr. Tim Cook from Clackamas Community College will arrive at Chemeketa Community College in Salem on Tuesday, July 22 between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m.—his 1,500-mile run aims to raise support for the basic needs of community college students statewide, and locals are invited to gather at the Cherriots Bus Turnaround with decorated signs to cheer him on. 1430 KYKN

- ➤ Salem City Council will hold a work session on July 21 to discuss ways to improve downtown safety and livability after a stabbing at Union Gospel Mission in June — the meeting starts at 6 p.m. in Loucks Auditorium at the Salem Public Library and can be viewed online. Statesman Journal
- ➤ City officials announced that a portion of 15th Street NE between Marion Street NE and B Street NE will be closed to through traffic from July 21 through Aug. 15 for bridge strengthening work over Mill Creek. The project is the third of four planned improvements using funds from the voter-approved 2022 Safety and Livability Bond to let heavier trucks pass safely. 1430 KYKN
- ➤ Six Oregon airports will receive $5.15 million from the FAA for key infrastructure upgrades, including runway and terminal improvements. Salem’s McNary Field will get a $245,000 grant to fix its taxiway as it prepares to lose its only airline on Aug. 10 — a measure announced along with similar funding for five other regional airports. - ➤ Governor Tina Kotek declared a state of emergency on July 16—set to last until December 31—as wildfires lower visibility and create hazardous driving conditions; authorities urge drivers to check road conditions and have an emergency kit ready.
