CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities continue investigating the March 25 death of Adam Mansour, 40, who was found unresponsive in his Marion County Jail cell just before 3:15 a.m.—the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office said details remain unclear as another inmate died two months later.  Salem Reporter

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A local birder confirmed that the three osprey nests in south Salem—at Minto-Brown Island Park, South Salem High School, and the west terminus of South Madrona Avenue—have active nestlings. The observer said that young osprey at Minto-Brown are now feeding themselves—indicating that urban waters can support wildlife—and experts stress the need to keep local streams and lakes healthy.  Salem Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Interstate Business Solutions laid off 40 Oregon employees — many of whom were formerly incarcerated or veterans — after ODOT did not renew its highway cleanup contract because lawmakers failed to pass the transportation spending package. The department will cut $355 million in spending and scale back contracts while only three employees remain until the end of the month.  Salem Reporter
  • Boba Subasic, the former chief information officer at the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission, was found to have used confidential information to acquire rare liquor bottles from the OLCC reserve stock—commissioners gave him 21 days to contest the preliminary ethics violation or settle with a fine. The finding follows investigations into similar conduct by other former officials.  Salem Reporter
  • Gov. Tina Kotek declared a state of emergency in Oregon on July 16 due to the threat of wildfires, and the order will last until the end of the year. The declaration calls on state agencies—such as the National Guard—to help fight the fires and keep people informed about changing conditions.  Statesman Journal

  • Salem’s popular Hoopla 3-on-3 basketball tournament returns next week from July 22 to 27 in front of the Oregon State Capitol with nearly 1,100 teams signed up, and games will be free for spectators. Organizers have launched a fundraiser for Hoopla National — a project to build a year-round sports complex — with a start-up goal of $250,000 to secure a lasting home for the event.  Salem Reporter
