- ➤ Marion County Fair will open at Oregon State Fairgrounds from July 10 to 13 and will feature carnival rides, live music, contests, animal shows, and agricultural auctions. Ticket prices start at $9 for adults and $5 for seniors and youth (children under 5 are free) while ride and food tickets are sold separately. Salem Reporter
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 41 year old Salem man was arrested on July 6 after ramming his truck into a Sherwood police car at about 4:20 p.m. and allegedly shooting at officers following calls of reckless driving and gunfire near a storage facility—he surrendered and now faces charges of first degree attempted murder with a firearm and second degree assault. Statesman Journal
- ➤ On June 16 at 8:20 a.m., a fire on a railroad trestle near the South Block Apartments at 315 Commercial St. S.E. was determined to be arson while firefighters quickly controlled the blaze and police ask anyone with tips to call 503-588-6123—no arrests have yet been made. Salem Reporter
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ This month, Salem galleries and museums offer diverse art shows including internationally recognized Afro-futurist works by Nikesha Breeze and an exhibit on Oregon’s first female governor Caralyn B. Shelton—local venues also present events like a joint reception on July 11, a garden party on July 19, and sessions on hummingbirds and yoga. The schedule provides free admission at many sites along with additional hands-on activities for visitors. Salem Reporter
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Marion County officials have delayed the police crisis response team because a mental health worker quit last month. The team was set to start on July 1 but will begin in six to eight weeks — funded by a federal grant and county money. Salem Reporter
- ➤ The city of Salem sued former ambulance provider Falck on July 1 for $6.9 million because it did not supply enough ambulances under its contract and forced the fire department to work extra hours—adding extra costs for fuel, maintenance, and supplies. The lawsuit claims that Falck’s staffing failures led to 54,000 extra work hours and 9,259 instances when the fire department had to respond to calls. Salem Reporter
- ➤ The National Park Service listed the Salem Substation Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places in spring after SACHP recommended it in February for its role in powering rural communities during World War II—its Control House is a rare example of Streamline Moderne design used by BPA during the Master Grid Development period. The district, which has six built resources, is located on Dallas Highway in Polk County and now qualifies for federal tax benefits and preservation grants. 1430 KYKN
