- ➤ Salem man Jose Manuel Corral-Zavala was sentenced on June 27 by Judge Monte S. Campbell to nearly 64 years in prison for firing on law enforcement, leading a high-speed chase on September 30, 2023, and causing an accomplice’s death and over $190,000 in property damage in West Salem — the three-day Polk County trial held him accountable for his actions. 1430 KYKN
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Salem-Keizer School District ended its contract with Bridgeway Community Health, resulting in the layoff of seven counselors on June 12 and leaving substance abuse counseling for hundreds of students to be managed by new providers starting in the fall. District officials said Bridgeway’s proposal for fewer part-time counselors—providing only the equivalent of four full-time positions—did not meet the district’s service needs. Salem Reporter

- ➤ The Oregon Government Ethics Commission launched an investigation into state Rep. Greg Smith for allegedly using his role as executive director of the Columbia Development Authority to raise his salary without proper board approval+ investigators are checking if he failed to disclose a conflict of interest in the process. - ➤ Lawmakers abandoned a last-minute amendment that would have delayed Oregon’s campaign finance limits from taking effect in 2027—Secretary of State Tobias Read said no progress was made before adjourning and that technical fixes will be addressed in a future session. Salem Reporter
- ➤ Salem Fire will take over city ambulance service from Falck Northwest on July 1 after city leaders ended the private contract due to slow response times and unmet obligations. The city has bought 12 new ambulances and hired 60 people (more than half are former Falck employees) to boost the public workforce and maintain emergency service levels. Statesman Journal
- ➤ Oregon lawmakers abandoned an effort to postpone campaign contribution limits until 2031, Secretary of State Tobias Read said—leaving the $3,300 cap for individual donations to take effect in 2027 and requiring lawmakers to address needed technical fixes. Oregon Capital Chronicle
- ➤ Salem’s Civic Center, built in the early 1970s and on the National Register, will get a seismic retrofit as city staff move to temporary offices this summer. The work will take 18 to 24 months and is managed by Howard S. Wright, Hacker Architects and CB Two Architects — experts chosen to keep the building safe and energy efficient — with staff set to return in late 2026 or early 2027. Salem Business Journal
- ➤ The Oregon Legislative Assembly passed SB 537 B—a law that protects healthcare workers by requiring annual workplace violence prevention training and safety measures in hospitals, home health agencies and hospice programs.
