Good morning, Salem. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 27th of June.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Salem Parks and Recreation announced summer camps starting June 30 that offer programs ranging from tree climbing and wilderness survival to LEGO building and sports — fees range from $15 per day to $380 for overnight trips with waivers for eligible residents. The new offerings were made possible after a property tax levy passed, helping the city overcome a $14 million budget shortfall that had threatened these programs. Salem Reporter
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The U.S. Drought Monitor said Oregon is abnormally dry after a very dry spring, with 42% of the state in moderate drought and 6% in severe drought—conditions that will likely raise wildfire risks this summer. State climatologist Larry O’Neill said low soil moisture and stream flows mean that any rain will only offer brief relief. Statesman Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The $11.7 billion Transportation Reinvestment Package passed the committee vote with eight yes votes and four no votes and will go to a vote today in the House. The bill changes taxes on gas and payroll to raise money for roads, bridges and transit while trying to cover a $350 million gap and avoid job cuts at ODOT — although some lawmakers doubt it will work. - ➤ Oregon State Parks approved a 25% fee increase for out-of-state visitors—beginning July 1, non-residents will pay $12 to park at the 25 state parks with fees. The commission also ended the morning beach driving window in Manzanita and approved buying 37 acres near Silver Falls for staff housing and emergency response. Statesman Journal
- ➤ Oregon lawmakers in the House passed Senate Bill 243 that bans rapid fire accessories and gives local governments the power to bar concealed handguns in public buildings. The bill passed by a 33 to 10 vote and will have a third reading in the Senate while another gun licensing measure was sent back to committee. Oregon Capital Chronicle
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ More than 600 doctors, nurses and health care providers from across Oregon have signed a letter asking state and federal lawmakers to block proposed Medicaid cuts that could leave nearly 300,000 people without insurance. The signatories, including almost 50 from Marion and Polk counties, warned that these changes will delay care and strain local hospitals—some even met with lawmakers in Washington D.C. to express their concerns.
