Good morning, Salem. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 21st of June.

CRIME NEWS

  • A Beaverton man died in Marion County Jail on Thursday after he was found unresponsive in his cell — deputies and medical staff tried to revive him while the Oregon State Police launched an investigation and he faced assault charges with a plea hearing scheduled for Friday morning.  Salem Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers are reviewing a combined bill that revises the rules for involuntary mental health treatment and limits community restoration durations—moves meant to address federal court orders and reduce fines. Critics say the package muddles needed reforms and may add unfunded mandates to local counties—concerns raised during recent public hearings.  Salem Reporter
  • On Friday, the Oregon House voted 32-16 on House Bill 3954 that requires the governor's consent before any federal use of the Oregon National Guard. Lawmakers said the measure is meant to keep the guard ready for emergencies—like wildfires—and to stop its use in law enforcement or immigration roles.  Salem Reporter
  • Salem city councilors will vote Monday at 6 p.m. at Loucks Auditorium on a 2026 budget worth $785 million and a five-year capital improvement plan estimated at about $420 million—measures that include forming a seven-member oversight committee to track levy funds for parks, the library, and Center 50+. Public comments can be submitted before the meeting as the council also reviews the downtown parking tax details.  Salem Reporter
  • Oregon’s transportation funding bill, House Bill 2025, is headed to the House floor following a 7—5 committee vote and must pass both chambers by June 29 to secure nearly $14.6 billion over 10 years for road and bridge improvements statewide. The bill also includes funds for local projects—such as upgrades to a Salem bridge off Center Street—to help avoid a severe infrastructure deficit.  Oregon Capital Chronicle
  • Senate President Rob Wagner removed Sen. Mark Meek (D-Gladstone) from the Joint Committee on Transportation Reinvestment minutes after the session began on June 20 and appointed himself to fill the vacancy. Meek said he would vote against the bill because he and other members had insufficient time to review its amendments aimed at raising $14.5 billion over 10 years through new taxes and fees.  Statesman Journal
