EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday, the Salem-Keizer School District reported that 2,908 students earned diplomas and 114 earned GEDs as part of the Class of 2025, with some continuing summer school. This class is the first to complete four full in-person years since the Covid pandemic and includes 331 graduates who earned a seal of biliteracy (with 88 from McKay, 64 from North, 60 from South, 48 from McNary, 38 from West, 20 from Early College, nine from Sprague and four from Roberts). - ➤ The Oregon Division of Financial Regulation urges Salem residents to watch for signs of elder financial exploitation on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day tomorrow. TK Keen said scammers may use tactics like urgency+ fear to trick seniors, and families are encouraged to talk about common scams. 1430 KYKN
- ➤ ODHS is launching two programs to help fathers stay involved when their children enter the child welfare system—one supports jailed fathers and the other connects fathers with open cases. A Father’s Advisory Board works with ODHS to improve outreach and build stronger family ties. 1430 KYKN
- ➤ The Oregon Government Ethics Commission voted Friday to investigate Salem Mayor Julie Hoy and all seven city councilors for their part in repeated communications before former City Manager Keith Stahley’s sudden resignation. The probe follows a complaint from a Salem resident and will determine if ethics rules were broken (officials may receive a letter of education if violations are confirmed). Salem Reporter
- ➤ Lanes on Lone Oak Road Southeast in south Salem are closed for NW Natural gas work; the southbound lane is shut between Kuebler Boulevard Southeast and Khartoum Street Southeast Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the entire road is closed on June 21 and June 22 with traffic detoured via Liberty Road South—Holder Lane Southeast. - ➤ The southbound lane of Lone Oak Road SE between Kuebler Boulevard SE and Khartoum Street SE has been closed on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. since June 9 for NW Natural Gas to install a high-pressure regulator, and the road will close entirely on June 21 to June 22—drivers must detour to Liberty Road S and Holder Lane SE as work is projected to finish by the end of August. 1430 KYKN
- ➤ Transportation workers testified at a three-hour hearing on House Bill 2025 on Thursday evening, urging the legislature to fund roads, bridges and transit projects as they face staff shortages and safety risks. Opponents said the bill will burden low- and middle-income drivers with new taxes like higher gas and vehicle registration fees, and a vote on the proposal is still pending. Oregon Capital Chronicle
