COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Movies in the Park will return in July and August at Riverfront Park’s Gerry Frank | Salem Rotary Amphitheater with family-friendly films including Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire on July 11, Inside Out 2 on July 25, The Wild Robot on Aug. 8, and Wicked on Aug. 29. Guests should bring a blanket or low-back chair as shows start at sunset — alcohol and smoking are not allowed.  1430 KYKN

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Stayton Fire District responded to a 4-acre grass fire near Santiam Loop Southeast and Stayton Road Southeast at 1 p.m. June 12—caused by a tractor raking hay—and firefighters from Aumsville, Turner, Sublimity and Jefferson helped put the blaze out without any injuries or damage to structures. Shortly after, they handled a small fire on Marion Road—started by a spark from mowing—and officials warned that the early fire activity makes the upcoming season worrisome.  Statesman Journal

  • A’drianna White graduated from Roberts High School after overcoming a house fire, COVID disruptions, and teen parent challenges while caring for her daughter; she will attend Mt. Hood Community College’s funeral service education program this fall to study mortuary science and cosmetology.  Salem Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Oregon Department of Early Learning and Care celebrated five years of its free Preschool Promise program at an event at North Salem High School’s Early Learning Center, marking a milestone for preschool access for three- and four-year-olds from qualifying families. The program now serves more than 5,200 children across nearly 330 locations statewide—supporting quality education and competitive pay for early learning providers.  1430 KYKN
  • Oregon lawmakers revised Senate Bill 916 to limit unemployment benefits for striking public and private employees to 10 weeks after a two-week waiting period—this compromise must still be approved by both legislative chambers before becoming law. Lawmakers believe the change will better manage the state’s $6.4 billion unemployment insurance fund.  Salem Reporter
