  • Hunsaker Dental, a family-run practice on Commercial Street led by Dr. Travis Hunsaker, will open a new facility at 835 Commercial St SE by the end of the year to meet growing patient demand and add new dental staff — the expansion builds on over 25 years of service started by Dr. Benjamin Hunsaker.  Salem Business Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • A judge ordered Tony Williams to remain in jail while a mental health expert evaluates his fitness to face charges for the June 1 stabbing at the Union Gospel Mission—his case was paused after his attorney expressed concern over his ability to assist in his defense.  Salem Reporter

CULTURE NEWS

  • Salem's public archaeology project will host an open house on June 13th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Willamette University (east of Smullin Hall, 900 State Street) where visitors can view an excavation site and recovered artifacts from the former Oregon Indian Mission Manual Labor Training School. The project uses a CLG grant from Oregon Heritage and partners with Willamette University, the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Oregon Archaeological Society to study the site.  1430 KYKN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Salem-Keizer School District has launched a new push to improve reading after state tests showed two in three students are behind—teachers now use small group phonics lessons and updated tools to help struggling readers. This effort focuses on using extra training, curriculum changes, and data systems like STAR tests to track progress—aiming to boost students’ basic reading skills for better learning in all subjects.  Salem Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After nearly 40 years in Portland, Oregon Veterans of Foreign Wars moved its headquarters to a new ADA-compliant building on 880 Liberty Street N.E. in Salem—holding a ribbon cutting and open house on June 6th for veterans, service members, and their families. The new location will ease volunteer commuting and allow the group to engage with state legislators—strengthening its service to the community.  Salem Reporter
  • Oregon Housing and Community Services released a draft Action Plan Amendment for a $422 million disaster recovery grant funded by HUD — it seeks public input on reallocating funds to support the Gates Wastewater Collection System project in Marion County. Public hearings will be held on June 23 at 6 p.m. in Salem and virtually on June 25 at 6 p.m., and comments will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. July 9.  1430 KYKN
  • Salem city council voted to restore $50,000 funding for the Church at the Park safe parking program that gives homeless people safe places to sleep in vehicles, access to showers, and case management services — the funds will keep the program running through February while alternative long-term funding is secured.  Salem Reporter
  • Governor Kotek signed Senate Bill 951 on Monday to limit corporate control over medical practices so local health care decisions stay in local hands—clinics have a three-year period to comply while hospitals, tribal facilities, behavioral health programs and crisis lines are exempt.  Salem Reporter
  • A Senate bill that prevents school libraries from removing books because of a book's focus on a protected class passed the Oregon House and is headed to Gov. Tina Kotek—expected to sign it soon. The measure, which allows complaints only when material is too graphic or not age appropriate, previously passed the Senate with an 18-10 vote.  Salem Reporter

  • Andrew Mhoon from Sprague High School matured into a trusted leader on the field and in class as he balanced a high GPA with his baseball career.
