CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On June 8 just before 10 p.m., a pedestrian identified as Michael Martinez, 52, was fatally struck near the 6000 block of Silverton Road NE in Salem as deputies responded and the Marion County CRASH Team—joined by local agencies—investigated the incident while the 58-year-old female driver remained at the scene and no citations or arrests were made. 1430 KYKN
- ➤ Tony Williams—who has a 20-year history with mental health and criminal justice systems—got off a bus in Salem on May 31 and later attacked the Union Gospel Mission by stabbing 12 people, which left several injured and led to his arrest on charges of attempted first-degree murder and second-degree assault. - ➤ On June 3rd, the historic Horse Stadium and the Poultry Building at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem received exterior renovations that included brick wall repairs and new windows. Masonry crews restored both buildings to historic standards — a project celebrated by state fair officials. Statesman Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Friday, June 6, 2025, 87 students graduated and 16 earned their GEDs during a ceremony at Sprague High School—Roberts High School also highlighted its Teen Parent Program in the celebration. Salem Reporter

- ➤ Gov. Kotek signed Senate Bill 951 on Monday, which stops large companies from controlling local health care centers and gives clinics 3 years to meet new rules—hospitals, tribal centers and crisis lines are not included—so that health care stays under local control. Oregon Capital Chronicle
- ➤ The Oregon legislature passed Senate Bill 1098 — which prevents libraries from removing books due to content about protected classes — and sent it to Gov. Tina Kotek’s desk for her signature. - ➤ Dr. Brandon Tieu demonstrated the new lung biopsy robot during a May 30 event at Salem Hospital—community members tried the system that turns lung scans into a 3-D image and guides a tiny catheter toward lesions.
