ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On June 5, a 33-year-old Salem man named Jesse Wadley died when his speeding motorcycle crashed on Lancaster Drive SE—investigators said a passenger in the other vehicle was taken to the hospital.  Statesman Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Emma Tribbey from West Salem turned her past struggles with depression into a plan to help children through tough hospital visits; she graduated from Salem’s Career Technical Education Center and will work as a child life specialist—guiding kids in understanding their care.  Salem Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The POWER Act creates a new rate class for data centers and Bitcoin mining facilities so that tech companies cover infrastructure costs instead of local customers, and it passed Tuesday in the Senate and Thursday in the House — Gov. Kotek is expected to sign it soon.  Salem Reporter
  • Salem City Council will hold a public hearing Monday at 6 p.m. at Loucks Auditorium at Salem Public Library to finalize an amended 2026 budget that preserves city services and expands library hours by adding three new employees. Councilors will also vote on a new paid parking system set to begin July 10, a $1 million Civic Center seismic retrofit addition, and pedestrian safety measures with a potential $10 million grant — public testimony is invited.  Salem Reporter
  • Downtown Salem will soon have a paid parking system—city officials plan to introduce the new regulations as details are finalized.  Statesman Journal
  • Mark Wardell, West Salem’s CERT leader, explained how local authorities set evacuation plans during disasters and detailed a deployment exercise held on May 31 that tested response skills for scenarios like tornado aftermath and road blockages. Tina Kotek ordered the extradition of a suspect from a multi-state burglary ring who targeted Asian households in Eugene and fled to Texas (after review with the Lane County DA’s office), marking her second reversal in two weeks (a change prompted by public pressure).  Oregon Capital Chronicle
