- ➤ Salem man Jose C. Aguilera-Frias, 48, was sentenced Friday to life in prison for intentionally running over Hermilo Mata Jr., the boyfriend of his estranged wife on December 22 in East Lancaster—he must serve 25 years before he can petition for parole and his driver’s license was permanently revoked. - ➤ Nikki Davis Eldridge works as a sign language interpreter at Salem Heights Elementary and at school board meetings where she helps about 10 deaf and hard-of-hearing students access classroom lessons. One of five interpreters in the program, she was nominated for a Crystal Apple award—recognizing her commitment to accessible education. Salem Reporter
- ➤ Chemeketa Community College passed a $140 million tax renewal bond measure that will fund projects such as a new trades center and the renovation of Building 7 into a community wellness center—keeping the tax at 27 cents per $1,000 of assessed value for Salem homes. Voters from the college’s four-county area approved the measure with about 53% support, setting the stage for future improvements in career and technical education. Salem Reporter

- ➤ A management review told ODOT to hire more consultants and form a major projects committee—steps meant to fix problems with budgeting, cost estimates and outdated forecasting methods.
