COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community members and advocates rallied May 21 on the back steps of the Oregon State Capitol to protest federal threats of food assistance cuts, asylum rollbacks, and ICE raids—urging lawmakers to pass five immigrant justice bills to protect families and support the local economy.  Statesman Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • In Linn County on May 20 at 2 p.m., Oregon State Police stopped a white Chevrolet Impala for an unlawful lane change and searched it when drug activity was suspected — they discovered 60 pounds of powdered fentanyl in the trunk and arrested Jose I Iribe from Oakland.  1430 KYKN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Oregon Senate passed House Bill 2698 that sets a goal for 65% homeownership by 2030 — the measure directs the housing department to track progress by race and ethnicity. The bill, which also passed the House, is now headed to Gov. Tina Kotek’s desk for her signature or veto.  Oregon Capital Chronicle
  • Salem voters passed a levy with 56% support late Tuesday night that will raise property taxes by 98 cents per $1,000 of assessed value—helping keep library hours and preventing cuts to parks and Center 50+ services. The tax is expected to bring in $14 million initially and take effect on July 1—city officials will adjust the budget once the next ballots are released.  Salem Reporter
  • Oregon lawmakers passed House Bill 2698 in the Senate with a 23–6 vote to set a goal of raising homeownership to 65% by 2030—now the bill goes to Gov. Tina Kotek for approval after a 42–8 House vote added momentum to the effort. The measure also requires the Housing and Community Services Department to track homeownership progress across racial and ethnic groups.  Salem Reporter
  • Salem officials say the five-year local option levy appears to be passing based on Wednesday morning data from Marion and Polk County residents. An update will arrive by 5 p.m. today and if it passes, the Salem Budget Committee will reconvene on May 28 to amend the FY26 Budget—ensuring funds for key community services.  1430 KYKN
