- ➤ A 58-year-old Portland man was arrested May 17 outside Silverton hospital on a warrant for a December 26 fatal hit-and-run in Woodburn—where 44-year-old Nicolas Hernandez-Mendoza died after being struck—and was taken to Marion County Jail. Statesman Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Voters in four Mid-Willamette Valley counties are deciding whether to approve a $140 million bond to fund a new trades center on the Salem campus and upgrade other Chemeketa facilities such as doubling the paramedic program in Brooks and adding a science lab in Woodburn - initial election results will be shared at 8 p.m. Statesman Journal
- ➤ Campus safety worker Cesar Villareal at South Salem High uses Connect 4 to help students return to class when they skip and build trust — his unique method earned him a nomination for a Crystal Apple Award given by the McLaran Leadership Foundation and the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce on May 29. He also helped launch a digital hall pass system at Leslie Middle School that has reduced hallway problems and gained support from a group of eighth graders. Salem Reporter
- ➤ House Bill 3012 will let 16- and 17-year-olds vote in nonpartisan school board elections starting in 2029; youth voting advocates met yesterday outside the capitol to urge lawmakers to pass the bill. Oregon Capital Chronicle

- ➤ Oregon Parks and Recreation Department joined with the Oregon Department of Forestry and other partners to mark Wildfire Awareness Month by urging Salem visitors to check campfire restrictions, use fire rings, keep flames low, and have water close at hand—rangers will enforce these rules with education and fines if needed. 1430 KYKN
- ➤ At a forum on May 12, Chris Eyler from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said that Congress faced a busy summer reviewing ways to extend key tax breaks under the 2017 law and ease tariffs hurting small manufacturers in Salem and the Mid-Willamette Valley. He explained that these federal policy decisions may affect hiring, prices, and local investment + that action on Capitol Hill is expected to shape the local business climate in the coming months. - ➤ Salem voters will decide on a five-year levy that will raise an estimated $14 million in fiscal year 2026 and $76.4 million over five years to fund the public library, parks and Center 50+. If the levy fails, staff layoffs and service cuts such as library branch closures and reduced park programs will occur in June — if it passes, current jobs and services will be maintained. - ➤ The Oregon Health Authority reported that overdose deaths dropped by 22% in 2024, from about 1,900 to 1,480—yet rates remain higher than in pre-pandemic years. State officials will expand treatment and harm reduction services to help lower overdose deaths further. Salem Reporter
