  • Friends of Felines rehomed its 20,000th cat— a long-haired gray kitten now renamed Suede— who now lives with Tasmyn Petlansky’s Salem family. The nonprofit celebrated the milestone by giving Petlansky a gift basket of cat toys and a cat tree.  Salem Reporter

CRIME NEWS

  • A federal judge sentenced 43-year-old California woman Jamie McGowen to 37 months in prison for stealing nearly $2M by failing to pay over $700K in payroll taxes from Al’s Trailer Sales in Salem and misusing $1.3M in Covid relief funds—she is also required to serve five years of supervised release and repay over $2M in restitution.  Salem Reporter
  • On May 15, deputies responded to a report of gunshots on the 3100 block of Tierra Drive NE in north Salem where a 48-year-old man was critically injured and a 27-year-old Keizer woman was arrested — on charges of attempted murder, first-degree assault, first-degree burglary and unlawful use of a weapon — and she is scheduled to be arraigned at 2:30 p.m. on May 16 at the Marion County Court Annex.  Statesman Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On May 16th, West Salem High School held its first live fire training exercise in its burn tower — 11 fire science juniors and seniors earned firefighter certification after training with full protective gear during a controlled burn that reached 700 degrees. School officials said the event involved over 40 volunteers from three fire agencies to supervise the exercise and prepare students for real emergencies.  Salem Reporter

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is taking comments until June 6 and holding public meetings on a plan to lower Detroit Lake for endangered spring Chinook salmon and to review dam hydropower usage — a change that could impact drinking water and fishing. An in-person meeting will be held in Salem at Broadway Commons on June 3.  Statesman Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A newly formed political action committee mailed flyers to Ward 6 voters urging support for independent council candidate Logan Lor ahead of Tuesday, May20. Lor said he did not ask for the mailers — he views them as a tactic to split votes in the three-way race.  Salem Reporter
  • Oregon lawmakers proposed House Bill 3532 to speed up renaming dozens of geographic features with names seen as insulting & derogatory. The bill would have the Oregon Geographic Names Board list offensive names within three years and work with tribes and local officials, though final changes still need federal approval.  Oregon Capital Chronicle
