  • On April 18, the Salem Chamber held its 75th First Citizen Awards Banquet at the Convention Center to recognize community leaders in business, nonprofit work, arts, philanthropy, and service, naming Laura and Dan Dorn as top honorees along with Alex Ferry, Tony Frazier, Carlee Wright, and Larry Tokarski.  Salem Business Journal
  • Marion Polk Food Share will double its food storage capacity by moving into a new warehouse at 3060 Industrial Way N.E. in fall 2027 — the building was purchased with $12.4M raised from community contributions and government funding.  Salem Reporter
  • Crooked House Playground reopened on April 21 at Bush's Pasture Park with new synthetic grass that replaced damaged rubber tiles. The installation marks the first use of playground-specific turf in Salem’s park system, which cushions falls and improves accessibility for children.  Statesman Journal

  • Tuition for Oregon residents at public universities is set to increase nearly $600 this fall (marking the 12th consecutive year of rises) as officials cite state underfunding, inflation, and enrollment shifts as key factors.  Oregon Capital Chronicle

  • ODHS is sharing details on SNAP work rules as new federal changes affect food benefits. The department urges those who lost aid to call (1-833-947-1694) soon to learn how they can reconnect with support.  1430 KYKN
  • Starting July 1, Oregon minimum wage workers in Marion and Polk counties will earn at least $15.55 an hour after a mandated 50-cent increase per hour, while other parts of the state see increases based on regional wage formulas (Portland workers will reach $16.80 and rural wages are set at $14.55).  Salem Reporter
  • Marion County Health & Human Services (key local provider) announced the departure of longtime administrator Ryan Matthews and deputy director Katrina Griffith on Wednesday, April 22.   • On Tuesday, Apr. 14 the Keizer Parks and Recreation Advisory Board voted nearly unanimously to study adding a community facility at Keizer Rapids Park — preserving at least 80% of its natural open space. The proposal now goes to the Keizer City Council for further review.  Salem Reporter
