- ➤ ARG Industrial, a distributor owned by its employees that specializes in hydraulic and industrial solutions, will open a new facility near McGilchrist and 22nd this summer to serve local businesses. The company will offer custom services for agriculture, manufacturing and construction while partnering with Garten Services Inc as title sponsor for the Sip and Stroll in June to strengthen community ties. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Two robotics teams from West Salem High School will compete in the VEX Robotics World Championship in Dallas, Texas in May as they build robots that pick up colored rings to score points + test climbing moves during the High Stakes game. Team Xenon earned an Excellence Award at a state competition and Team Voltage, a group of sophomores, will join them + both teams are raising funds for travel and lodging costs. Salem Reporter

- ➤ Oregon lawmakers are reviewing three gun control bills—one raises permit fees and adds a waiting period, another requires state licensing for dealers, and the third bans devices that speed up firing—as legal fights over Measure 114 continue. - ➤ Governor Tina Kotek, a Salem resident, said she will vote for a temporary livability tax levy to help keep the city’s libraries, parks, and senior center open as Salem faces a $14 million budget gap—property owners would pay 98 cents per $1,000 of assessed value, roughly $229 a year for the average homeowner. - ➤ Governor Tina Kotek said she will vote for a temporary property tax levy on the May ballot that would charge about 98 cents per $1,000 of assessed value to keep Salem's libraries, parks and senior center open as the city faces a $14 million budget gap. She added that other residents should support the measure while state lawmakers consider a bill to send $7 million yearly to help cover emergency services for state-owned properties. Salem Reporter

- ➤ Local health leaders released an assessment showing that residents in Marion and Polk counties have rising depression, chronic health issues, and housing instability (which limits access to proper care). The group will use input from over 2,000 survey responses to form focus groups and develop a five-year plan for improved housing, care access, and treatment for mental health and drug use starting in 2026 (building on past efforts). - ➤ Oregon Housing and Community Services announced its Down Payment Assistance program helped 269 Oregonians buy a home in 2024 by disbursing almost $10 million with an average down payment of $28,315 for homes costing $339,689—150 buyers were first-generation and 55% identified as people of color.
