Good morning, Salem. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 11th of April.

CRIME NEWS

  • Salem man John Albert Herriges, 47, was arrested at a 2:00 p.m. traffic stop on Wednesday, April 9th after Lincoln City police linked him to burglaries at Dutch Bros and Human Bean stores—he now faces charges for burglary, criminal mischief, theft, and attempted theft while evidence and his vehicle have been seized.  1430 KYKN
  • Trucking companies and driver Lincoln Smith face four lawsuits over a May 18, 2023 crash on I-5 near Salem that killed seven farmworkers and hurt three—lawsuits that say his falling asleep at the wheel and poor safety measures caused the crash—and they seek up to $502 million in damages.  Salem Reporter

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rainbow Dance Theater and Salem Symphonic Winds will premiere the ballet 'The Princess and The Wind' Sunday afternoon at South Salem High School’s Rose Auditorium at 4 p.m. The performance will use electric scooters as hoverboards — with music featuring ax handles and bright costumes — to bring Mayan folklore to life in a one-time show.  Salem Reporter

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Tina Kotek and Education Director Charlene Williams said the state declined a federal demand to end diversity, equity and inclusion programs after a U.S. Department of Education letter on April 3 — officials had threatened to withhold Title I funds if programs were cut. They maintained that current initiatives follow federal civil rights law and the state remains committed to supporting public education.  Oregon Capital Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Salem’s city budget committee will meet Wednesday, April 16 at 6 p.m. in the city council chambers at 555 Liberty St. S.E. to review the proposed 2026 budget that cuts library hours, parks services, and 51 jobs to address a nearly $14 million deficit. A registration form for live testimony will be available from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.—one of four meetings planned over the next four weeks before the Council approves the final budget in June.  Salem Reporter
  • Oregon lawmakers tabled Senate Bill 80 after a contentious Salem hearing, stopping plans to ban new or larger livestock farms in regions with high nitrate pollution—this decision means that no restrictions will be placed this year on big livestock operations in these areas, leaving residents in the Lower Umatilla Basin still concerned about worsening water quality.  Oregon Capital Chronicle
