CRIME NEWS

  • A report released Tuesday by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office found that shootings in Marion County have more than tripled over the past decade with one in three involving gang members and a sharp rise in gun violence among teens. Local leaders called for a multi-agency team to address youth and gang violence — recommendations that came after months of delays in obtaining the report.  Salem Reporter

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Salem’s retail market slowed last year as leasing activity fell over 34% and average lease size dropped nearly 18% compared to 2023 — though retail rents increased 2.2% and sales rebounded with 36 transactions totaling $38 million. Looking ahead, retail tenants will expand their footprints and vacancy rates are forecast to drop from 3.6% to the low 2% range if economic conditions hold.  Salem Business Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sprague High School seniors Matthew Meyers and Colin Williams earned second place in state after outperforming larger teams in constitutional law and will travel to Washington D.C. this week to compete nationally and meet U.S. Rep. Andrea Salinas and U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley—while their teacher Jaqueline Pope postponed her maternity leave to help them prepare 12 speeches on key topics.  Salem Reporter
  • Chemeketa Community College’s planetarium will screen the short film 'Two Small Pieces of Glass' about telescopes every Friday through June 6; each show starts at 7:30 p.m. with doors opening at 7:10 p.m. (the venue seats 60 people) and includes a brief introduction to Salem’s night sky.  Salem Reporter

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The EPA withheld $85 million in funding for Oregon environmental justice projects, including a community center and climate resilience hub in Chiloquin and other efforts in Lane County and on the Grand Ronde Reservation after suspending 477 grants in March to cut federal spending. Local officials said they received only small reimbursements and now face halted progress and missed work plan deadlines + many communities await full funding.  Salem Reporter
  • The EPA has withheld $85 million in promised funds from 10 Oregon projects meant to support environmental justice and climate resilience—Chiloquin and other local leaders say officials have released only a small portion of the money since early March, leaving these projects stalled.  Oregon Capital Chronicle

  • Salem uses red light and speeding cameras at six intersections to record traffic violations — drivers are urged to obey posted signs at these locations.  Statesman Journal
  • Senate Bill 83 passed the Senate Committee on Natural Resources unanimously Tuesday — the bill would repeal a wildfire hazard map that sets stricter rules on about 106,000 properties and has upset many rural residents. It will go to the Senate floor for a vote and must pass the House and be signed by the governor to become law.  Statesman Journal
