CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ On Saturday, April 5, visitors to Salem Public Library, Salem Art Association, and Salem on the Edge will spend 10 minutes quietly studying a single work of art as part of Slow Art Day. The library event runs from 11 a.m. to noon while the gallery events are from noon to 4 p.m.—organizer Susan Napack hopes the experiment gives everyone a new way to connect with local art. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Salem’s Head Start preschool programs continued operating after the federal regional office closed Tuesday—leaving staff without a clear federal contact for training and grants. Eva Pignotti of Mid-Willamette Valley Community Action Agency said the programs, which serve nearly 800 children, will keep running amid uncertainty over future funding. Salem Reporter
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City volunteers researching genealogy at the library quit after a new background check process mandated a waiver that authorizes invasive searches, city officials said—nine of 31 volunteers left since the process began last month. The city explained that only identity, address and national criminal records would be checked and that the new system for volunteers in sensitive roles is still being tested. Salem Reporter
- ➤ Marion County Public Works will upgrade park services by adding an online reservation system for campsites and picnic shelters, launching an easier-to-navigate parks website, and installing new bike racks through a grant. The County will also expand parking fees at popular parks, transform Parkdale into a neighborhood park, host Earth Day at Spong’s Landing on April 26th, and seek volunteer help for maintenance and restoration projects — all to improve park experiences. 1430 KYKN
- ➤ On April 3rd, the Oregon Building Codes Division released its first permit-ready plan for a code-compliant residential deck under the state's updated Permit-Ready Plans Program—this free plan is available for public use and more designs for accessory structures will come later this year. 1430 KYKN
