ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 58-year-old pedestrian was critically injured when he was struck by a pickup truck Tuesday morning around 9:45 a.m. in the Highland neighborhood — the 1900 block of Northeast Broadway Street was closed until officers prepared to reopen it.  Salem Reporter

CRIME NEWS

  • Mark Meleason filed a lawsuit in Marion County Circuit Court on March 21 claiming that state police and the Department of Justice failed to properly train DEA agent Samuel Landis, whose decision to run a stop sign during drug surveillance led to the fatal crash that killed his wife, cyclist Marganne Allen in March 2023 (he seeks $9.5 million in damages).  Salem Reporter

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A team of second- and fourth-graders from Heritage School won the regional round of ExploraVision with their project Lost Then Found, a micro-patch that sends health data from people with dementia to caregivers. They built a large-scale prototype using classroom materials—each student received a Chromebook prize, and the team will compete in the national final in Washington D.C. with winners announced in May.  Salem Reporter
  • Today, Gov. Tina Kotek proposed an extra $100 million for the Early Literacy Success Initiative to boost reading instruction and teacher training in Oregon schools — the proposal is set for a vote in the House Education Committee. More than 100 educators urged that 20% of the funds go to 42 high-need schools, including 12 in Salem-Keizer, so teachers can learn the science of reading — a change aimed at helping struggling students.  Salem Reporter
  • Gov. Tina Kotek has proposed an extra $100 million to continue the Early Literacy Success Initiative, with a vote scheduled today in the House Education Committee, to update reading curricula and train teachers. Literacy advocates urge the Legislature to direct 20% of the funds to 42 high-need schools—such as Washington Elementary in Salem—to boost literacy tutoring.  Oregon Capital Chronicle
  • Chemeketa Community College opened registration for its Fall 2025 Building Inspection Technology program to train new building safety professionals. The program adds three fast-track short-term certificates to help fill a statewide shortage of permit technicians, plans examiners and building inspectors — designed for working professionals.  1430 KYKN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nearly 1.2 million Oregonians have filed their 2024 state income tax returns, but over 1 million have not yet submitted theirs with Tax Day due April 15. Megan Denison of the Oregon Department of Revenue urged taxpayers to file quickly+use electronic filing for faster refunds and fewer delays.  1430 KYKN
  • The city of Salem will hold an open house on April 12 at Salem Public Library — 585 Liberty St. S.E. in the Anderson Rooms — from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to gather feedback on design plans for an updated Riverfront Park playground that will be completed in 2026 using a $770,000 state grant and city funds.  Salem Reporter
  • Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is seeking public comment on a proposal that would add a 25% out-of-state surcharge to parking permit fees and eliminate the 24-month permit—changes set to begin July 1. The department will accept comments until 5 p.m. April 30 and hold a virtual public hearing at 5:30 p.m. April 24.  1430 KYKN
