CULTURE NEWS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today, power rates for PGE customers rise by about 5%—averaging $7.97 per month—and Pacific Power customers face a 4.1% hike, or roughly $5.64 monthly, as utilities address higher power cost investments while rate increases are locked for three years.  Statesman Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Salem City Councilor Vanessa Nordyke announced her run for mayor, stressing affordable housing, public safety, and livability as key issues. The election will take place on May 19, with ballots mailed starting April 29 — a step reflecting her longstanding community service.  Statesman Journal
  • Cherriots honored veteran drivers David Nichols-Alarcon and Pavel Kuzmenko for reaching one million miles without a preventable accident at a Board meeting on March 26, 2026 in Salem (the transit agency plans an annual recognition event each September).  1430 KYKN
  • Construction will begin April 6 at downtown Salem's Marion Parkade at 538 Marion Street NE. The $6.2-million project will improve safety + maintain access during phases + finish in November.  Statesman Journal
  • The Public Utility Commission approved a 5% increase for Portland General Electric and a 4% rise for Pacific Power that takes effect today, raising bills by about $8 and $5 per month. The changes come as companies cite higher fuel costs plus investments in grid and clean energy, in line with a new law.  Salem Reporter
