Good morning, Salem. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 28th of March.
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Woodburn man was arrested Thursday in connection with a shooting at a Grand Ronde residence that injured a Sheridan man, who was treated for critical injuries at Salem Health and later transferred to a Portland hospital—alcohol was reportedly a factor and the suspect turned himself in after initially fleeing. Statesman Journal
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Columbia River Canoe Project documentary will screen Saturday, March 29 at Salem Cinema at 5:30 p.m. Two cousins paddled 1,300 miles from Butte to the Pacific Ocean — their journey is shown in the film — and a Q&A with co-creator Robert Lester will follow. Salem Reporter
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ On March 26, a crowded Capitol hearing saw children and seniors urging lawmakers to refer a ballot measure that would add a right to a healthy environment in our state constitution — the measure would guarantee clean air, water and a stable climate. Some groups warned that the amendment might lead to more lawsuits while supporters argued it would hold government accountable for protecting our natural resources. Oregon Capital Chronicle
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Oregon lawmakers released a two-year spending framework that boosts education and human services funding but limits other areas—officials warn that looming federal cuts could force tougher state measures. Local leaders said they will prepare further actions if federal changes delay critical programs, leaving essential services at risk. Oregon Capital Chronicle
- ➤ Marion County Circuit Court launched a new docket in November to support Native child welfare cases by following federal law and helping return Native children to family care—nine Native families have already been involved. The program, funded by a five-year $2.5 million federal grant, uses active support from tribal advocates to provide a welcoming, culturally respectful process for families involved in dependency cases. Salem Reporter
- ➤ Disability Rights Oregon alleged that an official report on the death of a 17-year-old in foster care—who lived in a hotel paid for by the state—misstated key information by claiming a rope was secured when it was accessible to him last summer. The group blamed systemic failures and poor training at the Oregon Department of Human Services for leaving the teen with the means to take his own life. Oregon Capital Chronicle
- ➤ Tribal leaders and state lawmakers are working on a bill that would let tribes ask to remove state control from their lands — a step meant to improve public safety and support tribal self-governance. Senate Bill 1011 would set up a clear process to reverse a 1953 federal law, allowing tribes to choose when to shift jurisdiction over their affairs. Salem Reporter
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A Marion County judge ruled that a $15 million lawsuit from Oregon Heart Center against Salem Health for allegedly monopolizing local heart care can move forward—this decision dismissed some claims while keeping the main antitrust allegation intact for trial. Salem Reporter
- ➤ The Oregon Health Authority report shows that prescriptions for life-ending medications grew 8.2% from 561 to 607 while deaths dropped 2.6% from 386 to 376 between 2023 and 2024—participant characteristics such as age and diagnosis stayed consistent. Published on March 27, the report confirms most participants were 65 or older and had cancer as their main health issue. 1430 KYKN
