- ➤ This week in Salem offers a variety of events starting with Pints for Pups at Santiam Brewing today at 5:30 p.m., a weekend plant sale with free guided tours at Deepwood Museum and Gardens on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a new bagel food truck opening Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.—a teacher comedy show at Infinity Room on Saturday at 9:30 p.m., a Bowie tribute concert at the Grand Theatre on Sunday at 4 p.m., and a spring break passport activity for students from Monday to Saturday. - ➤ Pentacle Theatre will premiere the fantasy musical Big Fish on March 21 at 324 52nd Ave. NW—this production follows a salesman with extraordinary adventures and his son who seeks the truth behind his tales. It will run through April 12 and features a 27-person cast along with a 10-person orchestra. Salem Reporter
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Chemeketa Community College in Salem partnered with Willamette Workforce Partnership to offer a free leadership training program for employees and job seekers from Marion, Polk and Yamhill counties. The 18-hour program will run on May 22, May 29 and June 5 and include lectures, group discussions and real-world case studies to help prepare participants for supervisory roles. 1430 KYKN
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State lawmakers released a budget framework for the next two years that proposes $11.4 billion for the State School Fund, a $1.9 billion increase for Human Services, and cautious spending amid possible federal cuts that may create budget gaps of $2.5 to $9.7 billion while not using Rainy Day Funds for wildfire suppression. They will hold public hearings starting Saturday at Mt. Hood Community College (in Gresham at 10 a.m.) and later in Astoria, Warm Springs, La Grande, Salem and Klamath Falls (on scheduled dates). - ➤ Oregon lawmakers released a $38 billion budget plan that will maintain current programs and close with a surplus of $987.5 million after saving $600 million—federal spending cuts could impose a multi-billion-dollar hole in the budget if they occur. Lawmakers will meet with residents in several cities including Salem in the coming weeks as they work to finalize the two-year plan. Salem Reporter
- ➤ Oregon lawmakers held a public hearing Tuesday on Senate Bill 1179 - a proposal that would let courts consider abuse as a factor when sentencing domestic violence survivors who commit crimes and allow those already in prison to petition for resentencing. Prosecutors warned the measure could be misused while two other related bills were also discussed. Statesman Journal

- ➤ Oregon State Police investigated after a patient died Tuesday at Oregon State Hospital in Salem— the Oregon Health Authority confirmed the unexpected death, noted that the family was notified, and said foul play was not suspected.
