ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Detroit, a tourist town east of Salem, experienced 110 mph winds on Dec. 16–17 that broke trees and damaged homes, and residents continued cleanup efforts as officials assessed the damage.  Statesman Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Postman post office in Salem remains open today during a slower holiday season. After losing its USPS contract in Sept. and remodeling its space (581 Lancaster Drive SE), the store continues to offer USPS shipping and plans to add FedEx, UPS, and DHL services next year.  Statesman Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Dec. 18-19, heavy rain triggered an overflow at the 100 block of Union Street NE that spilled about 2.8 million gallons of untreated sewage into the Willamette River. City officials posted signs advising residents to avoid water contact & water quality tests are ongoing.  Statesman Journal
  • Today, an atmospheric river caused South Falls to gush powerfully at Silver Falls State Park, drawing visitors to witness the natural water display.  Statesman Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Salem Human Rights Commission will offer a recorded 'Know Your Rights' session in the next couple weeks to explain rights when meeting federal immigration officers. The session—moderated in English and Spanish after dozens submitted questions—follows a state of emergency declared by city council on Dec. 1.  Salem Reporter
  • Marion County held a hearing on Dec. 18 about an unlicensed waste pit on a hazelnut farm outside Aurora. Owner Denise Burnham said the pit is for farm use since improvements were made for hazelnut planting, but county officials said charging fees for waste violates farm use rules.  Statesman Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Salem Health is talking to acquire Santiam Hospital in Stayton as the small hospital faces money problems. Officials said patients will see no immediate changes (such as to insurance or care) and the final deal may be set with the Oregon Health Authority in early next year.  Salem Reporter

SPORTS NEWS

  • North Salem High School was recognized by ESPN and Special Olympics for its Unified Sports program, which supports all students. The honor underscores the school's ongoing commitment to inclusion in local sports.  Statesman Journal
