- ➤ Newport restaurant Local Ocean Seafoods launched its 100% Fish Program in May to turn roughly 50,000 pounds of fish scraps into products like dog treats and bone broth—this effort supports local job growth and sustainable ocean practices while securing 12 wholesale accounts and starting national shipping in early November. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Polk County approved zoning for a solid waste transfer facility at the former Rickreall Dairy on Nov. 19—this project will move waste from haulers in West Salem, Dallas, Independence, Monmouth and Falls City and requires conditions such as shutting down the existing waste pond and rapid waste transfers. The decision ended a long regulatory process and comes amid local concerns over potential flooding and rising garbage rates while Apple Tree Holdings still must obtain additional permits.
