  • After school on Tuesday, a south Salem fourth grader brought a BB gun to McKinley Elementary and showed it to a classmate, causing staff to call police and launch an investigation—officials said no threats were made and details on consequences remain private.  Salem Reporter

  • Pentacle Theatre opens a new Christmas-themed play today at 7:30 p.m. at 324 52nd Ave. NW that features a chaotic 1910 family dinner disrupted by a failed robbery and humorous characters and runs through Dec. 13—ticket prices are $20 to $41.  Salem Reporter

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State data released Thursday shows that more than 15,000 Salem and Keizer students were chronically absent last school year, with only 57% attending at least 90% of the time—well below the state average. District leaders stress that improving attendance is key to raising academic achievement across all grade levels.  Salem Reporter
  • New state data showed that 87% of Oregon ninth graders were on track to graduate during the 2024-25 school year—yet nearly 35% of students were chronically absent, missing at least three weeks of class.
