COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This week Salem hosts many events including a Deepwood Museum holiday market on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., a roller derby doubleheader at Cherry City starting Saturday at 4:30 p.m., and a LEGO party for kids at Salem Library on Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m. The library also celebrates expanded hours with a Sunday event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.—Elsinore Framing holds an art auction on Sunday from 1 to 7 p.m. and internet personality Skweezy Jibbs premieres his film with a Q&A at Grand Theatre on Tuesday at 7 p.m.  Salem Reporter

CULTURE NEWS

  • State highway engineers tried to blow up an eight-ton gray whale with 20 cases of dynamite on a Florence beach in 1955 but the plan backfired when chunks of blubber flew and damaged a parked car—an event that Salem newspapers helped turn into a lasting part of Oregon history.  Salem Reporter
  • The Oregon Heritage Commission awarded $378,971 in competitive grants to 31 statewide projects on November 12 for preservation, research and oral history efforts. Locally, the City of Salem will use its funds for an archaeological excavation at the former Oregon Methodist Mission Indian Manual Labor Training School site — while the Willamette Heritage Center will complete preservation assessments on nearby historic buildings.  1430 KYKN

  • On Nov. 12, Marion County Fire District No. 1 held its first all-female promotional ceremony in Salem as Suzy Ryan, Trisha Preston, Caroline Kjeldgaard, and Leslie Simpson were promoted from paramedics to lieutenants—marking a historic step for the department.  Statesman Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Marion County Behavioral Health Crisis Center moved to a new, larger building at 1234 Commercial St. S.E. on Oct. 30, offering walk-in and law enforcement referrals more space and separated waiting areas—this expansion includes crisis stabilization rooms for individuals in both substance use and mental health need, and follows a ribbon-cutting on Oct. 27 celebrating its 30th anniversary. Anyone, even without insurance, can access free 24/7 services at the center.  Salem Reporter

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Salem Capitals have joined the revived United States Basketball League and will play next season as a founding member in a league that promises higher competition and a family-friendly experience. Team owner Jason Conrad said the new league will offer fair ticket prices and better exposure—helping Salem grow as a sports hub.  Salem Business Journal
