- ➤ Salem neighborhood associations are busy this November with community events such as peace walks, a kids clothing swap and a safe Halloween gathering at Washington Elementary’s gym—while also holding meetings where local officials and activists discuss park upgrades, mural guidelines and traffic safety improvements. Local groups from Central Area to West Salem are planning projects and sharing ideas to boost neighborhood well-being. Salem Reporter
- ➤ On November 11, Salem held a Veterans Day ceremony at the Oregon State Capitol where community members honored veterans with speeches, flag displays, and the national anthem. Local officials and veterans attended the event — a day to express gratitude for those who served. Statesman Journal
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Wendy's said it will close about 300 restaurants nationwide in the fourth quarter after closing 140 stores last year. The chain has 39 Oregon restaurants but has not yet said which ones will close + the move aims to fix underperforming spots. Statesman Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Salem-Keizer School District superintendent Andrea Castañeda told business leaders at a local chamber lunch that the district will boost reading skills with new in-class tests, teacher training, and a curriculum set to begin this fall — despite last school year showing only 25% of third graders met reading proficiency. She warned that moving students over the proficiency line for better headlines is not acceptable — and the focus will remain on meaningful learning improvements. Salem Reporter
