- ➤ Salem Public Library will restore Sunday service and extend evening hours at its main branch while adding Monday hours at the West Salem branch starting Monday, Nov. 10—using funds from a property tax increase approved earlier to recover cuts made in 2024. A community survey helped guide the changes that aim to meet local demand for more library access. Salem Reporter

- ➤ Salem’s Capitol Auto Group dealerships earned 11 national honors at an awards ceremony on October 9 in Nashville — Capitol Nissan was named the nation’s best dealership to work for and the group was praised for its strong workplace culture and community ties. 1430 KYKN
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Salem Fire Chief David Gerboth told city council that rising call volumes and stagnant staffing are causing slower fire engine responses even though the new ambulance service meets its eight-minute target—he said the department often runs out of resources during multiple emergencies and must rely on help from other agencies. - ➤ Back Line Real Estate pulled out of its plan to buy the former JC Penney building at 305 Liberty St. N.E. after evaluations showed that replacing essential systems like transformers, HVAC and plumbing would require significant investment—investors could not agree on a renovation budget. - ➤ Developers broke ground on a 105-unit Citizen Apartments project at 277 High St N.E. last Thursday at the former Salem City Hall lot. The $25 million project—supported by nearly $750,000 in urban renewal funds and offering 16 affordable units—will open in spring with studios, one, and two-bedroom units and modern amenities.
