The City of Salem and the Boys & Girls Club will host Red Ribbon Week from October 27–31 to teach kids how to live drug free and prevent opioid use.
Kids at eight clubs will join daily themed activities while the city holds a proclamation meeting on October 27 and lights the Union Street Railroad Bridge red.
🚨 Crime
A downtown Salem preschool closed indefinitely on Oct.
17 amid payroll issues and allegations of wage theft and embezzlement that left families without child care and staff without work—director Ramiro RJ Navarro resigned after employees reported receiving bad checks.
📰 Economy
Salem’s job growth slowed but still outperformed Portland and Eugene as employment reached nearly 7% above pre-pandemic levels—while unemployment rose to 4.9% with about 11,000 workers without jobs.
Analysts noted that shifts in leisure, retail and health care, along with government shutdown concerns, have raised caution about a possible recession.
