- ➤ Salem will host a variety of Halloween events this week as free activities take place at the Riverfront Carousel on Saturday—scary karaoke at the Grand Theatre also raises funds for a local musical and a haunted market runs on Sunday. Additional local events include a native plant sale at Keizer Rapids Park, a cumbia dance lesson at Xicha Brewing on Saturday, and a 'Princess Bride' screening at Salem Cinema on Sunday. - ➤ Salem’s Historic Grand Theatre is hosting Ghosts of the Grand, a haunted house and guided ghost hunt that lets visitors search for ghosts in its 125-year-old building from today until November 1. Tickets cost $24.95 each and the event uses tools like a spirit box and a crystal pendulum—giving guests a spooky way to explore Salem history. Salem Reporter

- ➤ Federal officials from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics did not publish the September jobs report because of the government shutdown that began Oct. 1 — leaving Oregon’s Employment Department and about 7,600 businesses without key data; officials will share unemployment claims data later today to help track job trends. - ➤ New state data shows many Salem elementary kids are struggling to read at grade level, and local schools are asking for volunteers to help restart tutoring programs at Yoshikai, McKinley and other schools.
